UU to host advanced screening of Cooper, Gaga film ‘A Star Is Born’

An advanced screening of “A Star is Born” will be held at Syracuse University in the HBC Gifford Auditorium next week, University Union announced Monday night.

The screening will take place on Monday, Oct. 1 at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free for students, university staff, faculty and the public.

Directed by lead actor Bradley Cooper, “A Star is Born” tells the love story of two musicians who meet at a bar. Cooper and Lady Gaga star respectively as Jack, a popular country musician, and Ally, an undiscovered singer. This film is Lady Gaga’s first leading role in a motion picture and Cooper’s directorial debut.

The movie follows the duo’s journey as Jack helps Ally confront her insecurities to reach stardom. As Ally gains fame, her relationship with Jack begins to crumble. The film explores issues of alcoholism and aging, both of which drive Jack’s internal conflict.

Rounding out the cast are Dave Chappelle, Andrew Dice Clay, Sam Elliott, Bonnie Somerville and Anthony Ramos. Singer Halsey and Shangela — a former contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race — make brief appearances in the film.

The musical-movie includes original tracks by Cooper and Lady Gaga. Early in the filming process, scenes were shot at Lady Gaga’s headlining performance at Coachella in 2017, according to Vogue. The soundtrack also showcases songs by singer-songwriter Julia Michaels and Mark Ronson, a musician and producer who’s well-known for “Uptown Funk” featuring Bruno Mars.

“A Star is Born” is based on the 1976 film by the same name starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. The 2018 version is scheduled to be released on Oct. 5.

The advanced screening will be hosted by University Union. For patrons who wish to request additional accommodations, email uuvicepresident@gmail.com.
