Hillel executive director to leave June 30 after 4 years in position

The executive director of Hillel at Syracuse University, Lowell Lustig, will be leaving on June 30 after more than four years in the position.

Lustig will take on a position at Hebrew College in Newton, Mass., as vice president for institutional advancement, he said. He said the decision is no reflection on SU and that his time here has been a remarkable experience.

‘I was offered an extraordinary opportunity to lead a program at Hebrew College and to be part of the administration of this school which is doing some cutting edge stuff in the Jewish community,’ he said.

Lustig came to SU in March 2001 to help coordinate the campaign to build the Winnick Hillel Center for Jewish Life. He also served as the associate dean for advancement at the SU College of Law before he became the executive director of Hillel.

Lustig said he is proud he will be leaving Hillel in better shape than when he arrived. Hillel has managed to turn itself around financially to help benefit students, and the volume of programming for students has increased significantly, he said.

The national search for a new executive director will be headed by Lynn Greenky, a Hillel board member and communication and rhetorical studies professor at SU, said Brian Small, program and special initiatives coordinator of Hillel. Greenky could not be reached for comment.

Small said the hiring committee is in the process of forming. The timeline for finding a new director has not been set yet.

He said: ‘It takes a little while to make sure you get the right candidate.’
