With ACC move, Board of Trustees chairman announces $1 million donation to SU

The chairman of the Board of Trustees on Monday announced a $1 million donation to the university, coinciding with the move to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Richard Thompson and his wife, Jean Thompson, pledged the money as part of The Campaign for Syracuse University — a fundraiser that reached its goal of raising $1 billion last fall, according to a Monday SU Athletics news release.

The donation will go toward improving the student-athlete experience and teams at SU, according to the release. The announcement was made a few hours after a press conference in New York City about SU formally joining the ACC.

“Today we toast the Thompson family as they have helped ensure the continued success of our athletic program,” Athletic Director Daryl Gross said in a statement.

Specific areas the donation will go toward will be announced in the next few months, according to the release.
